22 Life, power and careers of the inhabitants of the Musti micro-region in the light of epigraphic research

The lives of the inhabitants of the Musti microregion were closely tied to agriculture. During the early Roman Empire, Musti was surrounded by numerous private, community or imperial domains, such as the imperial property in Henchir Hnich (3.5 km west of Musti), where the first copy of the lex Hadriana de agris rudibus was recently discovered. Another example is the Fundus Turris Rutundae (7 km southeast of Musti), where the coloni fun[di Tur]ris Rutundae d(omini) n(ostri) Aug(usti) were active in 235 CE. In 2022, the prospection team in this area inventoried the funerary cippus (dated after 161 AD) of a slave named Saturninus, Augg(ustorum) verna, a member of the familia Caesaris. He acted (his function is unknown) in the administration of the domain and died at the age of 45.

The administration of a domain or domains in the microregion of Musti was also the responsibility of M. Ulpius Fortunatus, the freedman of Trajan, lib(ertus) et proc(urator) Aug(usti), whose funerary cippus was published in 2014 (AE 2014, 1525). His wife was a freedwoman, Coelia Thallusa, daughter of Aulus, who most probably came from Italy.
