9 Building B5 - The history of the city through stratigraphic research
During the 2019 and 2022 seasons, archaeological excavations were carried out in designated area XLIV. The aim of the investigations was to identify the annexes [B7] to the so-called Anonymous Temple (possibly Temple of the Diis Mauris Castoribus) [B6], more specifically in the area on the east side of the temple.
The research enabled us to determine the chronology of the area, which probably dates from the 1st century AD, even before the temple was built, in the 3rd century.
The stratigraphic layers also revealed the presence of several levels of levelling, as well as rubbish, fragments of various shapes, and the remains of stone cutting used in the construction and embellishment of the temple. The remains of combustion structures were also discovered, in the form of hearths, associated with layers of ash of varying thickness and extent, and charcoal debris. These elements are not only chronological markers, but also reveal the dynamism of the area and the changes, and even the architectural and functional evolutions, that occurred over the centuries. A succession of orders and town-planning projects during the Roman period.
